A visit to the Royal BC Museum in the spring and summer of 2009 will be an epic journey. Travel through world history spanning more than 1.5 million years and all parts of the globe in this North American premiere.

Neil and Kathryn married 6 years ago, and after a short while, Neil was on a mission to live on a golf course. At that point, Kathryn was still riding around in golf carts enjoying the scenery. When they saw the plans for the new Sayward Hill development, they knew Cordova Bay would be their new home course! They moved in at opening... June 1, 2005 and off they both went to the course... a lot. Neil is a grown-up golfer, disciplined as h*^%, spending more time at the Cordova Bay practice facilities than playing. Kathryn never practices, she’s ashamed to admit. Hence, Neil’s handicap: 9. Kathryn’s handicap: 21.
When did you start playing golf?
Neil: I think I was around 10. Taught by my Dad and thousands of dollars
worth of golf magazines. I took my first lesson (out of only a few I’ve
ever had), two years ago. I’m a highly analytical golfer. I just hit
the ball and hope for the best.
Kathryn: Neil bought me golf clubs on our
second or third date in 2002. It was not a subtle hint. I had never touched
a golf club, by age 47, and never had any desire to play. Neil was incredibly
patient, and taught me the basics, as I pulled my clubs over tee boxes,
chatted through the tee shots of our fellow golfers... you get the picture.
I had NO idea about any of it!
What is your favourite golf moment or best golfing memory?
Neil: Playing St. Andrews with my son, Ryan in 1998.
Kathryn: My first hole in one. Trickle Creek, Kimberley, hole #8, Aug.
13, 2007. I was playing with some very special friends Jan and Mike Huminuk
and I’ll admit it, I got all emotional (but so did everyone else).
However it equals my second one last week, May 12. After my first one,
all I could think of was... if only it had happened at home! And now it has...
And did you hear that I am a twin, and my twin’s name is Karen? And
the CB hole in one was witnessed by the two others in my threesome - “Katheryn” and “Karen”.
How unbelievable!
What is the best round you have ever played?
Neil: 77 at Cordova Bay, 2007.
Kathryn: 89 at Tobiano, same trip as my hole-in-one.
What is your favourite
hole at Cordova Bay?
Neil: 15, the view.
Kathryn: 15, the view, until last week, when it suddenly switched to hole
#11.
Who would you include in your fantasy golf foursome?
Neil: Moe Norman, Mike Weir, either of my sons.
Kathryn: Mike Weir (he’s from Bright’s Grove and I used to ride
my bike there to cash in pop bottles before Mikey was born), Anikka Sorenstam
and Amy McBride (Phil’s wife).
What is your favourite golf club?
Neil: My Taylormade Burner Driver.
Kathryn: My Nike Sasquatch Driver (a “Neil reject” that ended
up living in my golf bag).
What is your favourite golf course outside
Saanich?
Neil & Kathryn: The hole we’re pictured in below... Tobiano, Kamloops.

Karen Jawl
Sustainability Team Lead
2009 Power Smart Excellence Award Winner
Karen Jawl, the Sustainability Team Lead of Jawl Properties, a Victoria-based commercial property management firm, wanted to make her company’s buildings as sustainable as possible. Led by Karen, Jawl Properties’ Green Team started seeking energy efficiency opportunities in the company’s 14 buildings and, in 2008, completed retrofits in half of the portfolio. But Karen knew that physical improvements were only half of the solution. The other half was inspiring all building users, employees and tenants alike, to adopt behavioural changes to achieve the goal of making the facilities truly energy efficient. With Karen’s lead, Jawl Properties implemented a Workplace Conservation Awareness Program to engage employees and tenants. Through an array of marketing and communication channels, this initiative has already fostered a significant culture change toward energy conservation and the resulting energy savings complement those achieved through the retrofit projects. For Jawl Properties, being a leader in commercial property management means uniting the power of people’s awareness with the benefits of physical improvements.
